Hopefully I've posted this in the right set of threads.
I keep seeing something I like a lot, and I'm not sure if it's actual canon or just fanon. And it's that Cybertronians are a smaller, weaker protoform that wears armour.
Also I saw someone who came up with the idea that in highly dangerous situs, for example radioactive planets they wear a second set of over armour to protect from the radiation and that's actually sturdier, but can't be transformed in. [EDIT] Also appearing in TF:Prime, which I had forgotten.

I've noticed that trend picking up amongst the fanfic community lately. It's not an unfeasible theory, but it's definitely not canon, though. I'm kind of an oldster so I tend to stick with the idea of TFs as full-body cyborgs made of complicated machine parts. But, I'm also a fan of the idea of there being different types of Cybertronians too -- oldschool G1 guys look distinctively different from the more modern new-age TFP style of Cybertronians, etc. Mebbe some folks got upgraded over the millenia, mebbe some haven't changed at all... As for the idea of radiation suits, it makes sense -- but for different reasons. Radiation (ie, simple microwaves) can heat metal. Strong radiation (ie. inside a nuclear reactor) has the potential to melt/damage various materials with high to average melting points (in an Earth environment). So, wearing a suit in a radioactive situation to protect against temperature and pressure changes to personal metal makes perfect sense.

Not to mention protecting delicated electronics built into the cybertronian body, from sensors to internal components which might be sensible to certain types of energy (not just radiation).
