I. Welcome to Centar Neres
The following concerns the local star system where the game takes place.
The Neres (ner-EZ or NAIR-ez) System is a small, remote little burg located on the outer fringes of the Orion Arm, and is generally considered Way The Fuck Out There. It is home to two solid-core planets called Hagares and Panguul, and two gas giants called Cen Tetting and Cen Septian. (More on the other planets in the Novex thread.)
II. Welcome to Panguul
The planet where the game takes place on is called Panguul. It is a blue planet inhabited by a vast array of both organic and silicon creatures. The planet is composed of more water than land. Most of the landmass remains congealed into a single, Pangea-like continent called Aguippa. The planet's crust is rich in minerals like nickel, iron, magnesium-silicates and other types of chondrite materials. Panguul is still undergoing terraforming however, so it rains often around a large portion of the equator latitudes. The planet has two asteroid moons: Ipos, and Ika.
The planet belongs to the largely benevolent Federation of Blue Planets, which is a small organization dedicated to terraforming heavy-element planets to aid in the rehabilitation of entire civilizations which have been displaced by war or natural disaster. The FBP is a mysterious group that, while considered 'small', is only considered that size by influence on the interstellar political stage. No one really knows how big it is.
Anyway!
III. The Pangol People
Panguul is home to a hardy species called the Pangols. The Pangols resemble semi-humanoid pangoloids, and tend to look like this:
(picture)
They are a quiet, pseudo-mammalian species that keeps largely to itself, but they welcome visitors and are generally kind and considerate. Culturally they are somewhat like Indonesian-Asians, and don't tend to be warlike. Historically they are farmers, and while they do not raise cattle, they tend large insectoids, which are a primary source of protein for the population. They grow water-based crops, and as such they highly prize watery, swampy locations.
The Pangols have a habit of absorbing and assimilating anything they happen to come into contact with, especially other cultures. This makes them an ideal race to do business with, as they are highly adaptable and very open to different ideas. This does not mean they readily accept certain concepts, but they acknowledge that other people do.
They are a peaceful peoples, but will become defensive when under threat. This means closing up everything and hiding for the interim. And despite coming off as slow, they are clever little buggers.
PANGOL STATS
Average height: 6-10 feet tall
Average weight: 150-300 lbs.
Genders: male, female; 50/50
Distinguishing characteristics: Long, heavy tails; sharp, layered chitin scales that come in colours bronze; brown, black, ochre-red, ochre-yellow, gold, iridescent blue, iridescent green, iridescent violet; clawed hands and feet. If feeling threatened, Pangols can curl up into armoured balls to discourage predators. They have long, sticky tongues and a distinct sense of smell, both of which they employ for communication purposes.
The Pangols are tree-climbers and diggers. They have developed omnivore teeth, have two stomachs, and can be both diurnal or nocturnal. Pangols are monogamous, and females will lay up to eighty clutches of three eggs in their lifetime, but infant mortality rates are high. They live for roughly 60-200 years. Infants live on mother's milk for the first three months of their lives before learning to forage for insects and grasses. Males are larger than females, and will fight other males for the right to mate during breeding season. Breeding season lasts for four months out of a 12-month year, typically during spring.
Pangols also tend to be religious. They believe in various types of land-gods and wood spirits, and tend to be superstitious. They build small shrines for luck or influence out of stone and bamboo wood within town structures, and in general tend to be very Asian or Roman about their beliefs. However, they do not push their religion on others, and merely incorporate faith into their daily living as part of a normal lifestyle.
Pangols are social pod creatures, living in city-sized colonies of up to 20 to a million individuals. Linguistically they are divided up into at least twenty different dialects world-wide, and are comprised of at least fifty different nations.
The largest Pangol city on Panguul is INTYBUS.
IV. Welcome to INTYBUS
Intybus is the largest trade city in the system. The population, numbering into the millions, is densely packed into both vertical and horizontal spaces, and is largely made up of residential and slum neighbourhoods. The central part of the city comprises most of the city's upper class, with outlying neighbourhoods being more suburban and rural. More than half the population, however, is made up of ex-pats, local immigrants, and interstellar immigrants. The city is also oddly home to a high number of robot species due to the accessibility of Intybus' vast trade markets. In short: it's a wet, hot, rusty place, but you can get anything here.
(map)
Intybus is also a port city, accepting and facilitating trade both locally and interstellarly. (Is that even a word?) However, a large part of the city's amicability and desirability also stems from its notoriously loose handle on various import and export laws. Customs officials are easy to bribe, and while the city government denies any affiliation with illegals, it is clear that they carefully look the other way when a substantial profit can be made. Trade law tends to be a suggestion rather than an imperative.
The city climate maintains a bustling, busy atmosphere despite the high humidity and frequent rain. The ground the city is built upon also tends to be muddy nearer the banks of the Firdaus Bay on which it rests, which is where numerous slum habitations cluster, particularly close to harbours. The city is located near the equator, which accounts for the local weather and temperature, and while there is no winter in these parts, there is the rainy season. Flooding is controlled by the Novex Power Company. More on that in... the next post!
